The Order of Malta, a global organization providing medical and social aid across 120 countries, has long been committed to caring for those without access to healthcare. Its Oakland clinic continues that legacy today, offering free care to low-income and uninsured Bay Area residents. This design-build renovation expands the clinic’s capacity to advance its founding mission to uphold human dignity.
Growth and Flexibility Within a Limited Footprint
The Malta Clinic expansion transforms underutilized office space into a welcoming and efficient environment, increasing the number of exam rooms within a modest footprint. Delivered in two phases, first relocating existing office occupants, then constructing the clinic, the project maximizes efficiency while future-proofing the facility for growth.
New private offices and workstations support organizational growth, while a larger reception area enhances the arrival and check-in experience. Skylights draw daylight into the central corridor, creating a brighter, more welcoming environment for both patients and staff. Infrastructure is also in place to convert additional offices into future treatment spaces as the clinic grows. Modular casework and adaptable systems support continued flexibility over time.
Balancing Compassion and Caregiver Safety
A new reception security window with a speak-through circle and pass-through tray was installed at arrival to support caregiver safety alongside patient compassion. An additional back-of-house door connects to the Diocese and the building’s security system, giving staff another layer of protection.
