Located on the ground floor of a mixed-use multifamily housing complex, in the rapidly-developing Mission Bay neighborhood, this child development center offers an authentic, international Montessori Spanish Immersion curriculum focused on bringing peace, joy, and global mindedness to tis students. Named for San Francisco’s official flower and based on the holistic approach of Dr. Maria Montessori, the center is licensed to serve approximately 40 children, ages 18 months to six years old.
The transformation of the warm shell storefront into a nurturing and modern child development center celebrates the building’s materiality and urban setting within a vibrant neighborhood, adjacent to Mission Bay Creek and park. Large windows provide ample natural light throughout the space, and between open plan classrooms, with views to the outdoors, adding softness and reinforcing the warmth of the wood flooring. The program includes a preschool room and toddler room with kitchens, community multipurpose space, administrative offices and staff break room, dedicated outdoor play yard, and support spaces. The scope of work entailed new mechanical systems. Clear sight lines throughout, and dedicated classroom observation windows, support safety and supervision.
