This specialty clinic is a state-of-the-art health center that harnesses city-wide resources under one roof to address the needs of San Francisco’s children and families experiencing trauma. Located in Bayview-Hunters Point – one of the most economically disadvantaged and geographically-isolated neighborhoods in the city – the center provides a supportive and safe place where families have access to a continuum of services focused on addressing toxic stress.

Centralizing Care
This adaptive reuse project transforms a three-story office building in the Bayview into a welcoming and supportive hub focused on promoting healing, resilience, and hope.  Designed to serve up to 600 children a year,  it’s anchored by three community-based healthcare partners working together to address the immediate needs of traumatized children and provide comprehensive medical care to keep kids healthy. In addition to pediatric medical care, behavioral health services, case management, and coordinated response to child abuse, the center consolidates services from more than 25 city agencies and non-profit partners across the city.

Trauma Informed Design

The brainchild of Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, renowned for her ground-breaking research on the impacts of “toxic stress” on children, the center is sensitively designed to be a comforting and compassionate environment where children and their families are immediately connected to the critical support services they need to begin healing. Careful configuration of program, sensitivity to adjacencies, and integration of soft colors and warm and healthy materials work together to reduce anxiety.  Several alternate entrances and exits support anonymity and discretion, ensuring that children and families coming in for wellness services do not cross paths with child welfare workers or police officers participating in investigations.
